WHATISGM (“WHATISGM”, “we”, “us”, or “our”) is operated by Good Machine · XTRI Pty Ltd. We respect your privacy and are committed to protecting the personal information we handle. This policy explains what we collect when you visit whatisgm.com (the “Site”), why we collect it, how we use and protect it, and the rights you have over it.

We handle personal information in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs). If you do not agree with this policy, please do not use the Site.

1. About this policy

This policy applies to the public WHATISGM reader experience and to people who contact us. It does not apply to third-party websites, platforms, or services that we link to or embed (for example, social networks, video platforms, or the publishers we cite). Those services have their own privacy policies, and we encourage you to read them.

2. The information we collect

We aim to collect the minimum amount of information needed to operate the Site well. You can read WHATISGM without creating an account.

Information you give us

  • Contact details. If you email us or otherwise reach out, we collect the information you choose to provide — such as your name, email address, and the contents of your message.
  • Subscriptions and forms. If you sign up for updates or submit a form, we collect the details you enter (for example, an email address).

Information we collect automatically

  • Usage and analytics data. Aggregated, largely anonymous information about which articles are read, how long pages are viewed, referring links, and how the Site performs.
  • Device and log data. Standard technical information your browser sends, such as IP address, browser type, device type, operating system, language, and timestamps. We use this to keep the Site secure and working.
  • Cookies and similar technologies. Small files and equivalent storage used to remember preferences and measure performance. See the next section.

We do not knowingly collect sensitive information (as defined by the Privacy Act) through the Site, and we ask that you not send it to us.

3. Cookies and analytics

We use a limited set of cookies and similar technologies to run the Site, remember your preferences, and understand — in aggregate — how the Site is used so we can improve it. Where analytics are used, we configure them to favour privacy and avoid unnecessary personal data.

You can control or delete cookies through your browser settings. Blocking some cookies may affect how parts of the Site function.

4. How we use your information

We use the information we collect to:

  • operate, maintain, and secure the Site;
  • understand readership in aggregate and improve our content and features;
  • respond to your enquiries and provide support;
  • send updates you have asked to receive, and let you opt out at any time;
  • detect, prevent, and address technical issues, fraud, or misuse; and
  • comply with our legal obligations.

We do not sell your personal information.

5. AI-generated content and your data

WHATISGM articles are produced with the assistance of large language models (LLMs) and other automated systems. We want to be clear about how this relates to your privacy:

  • Our content is generated from publicly available third-party news sources that we reference — not from our readers’ personal information.
  • We do not use your personal information to train, fine-tune, or build AI models, and we do not feed reader personal data into the language models that draft our articles.
  • Optional Site features such as text-to-speech audio narration, on-demand PDF generation, and illustrative images are produced by automated tools at the article level and do not depend on your personal information.

6. Third-party services and providers

To operate the Site and produce our content, we rely on reputable third-party service providers. Depending on the feature, these may include:

  • News and data providers that supply the third-party source material our articles are based on;
  • AI / language-model providers that assist in drafting, classifying, and summarising content;
  • Media-generation providers for optional audio narration and illustrative images;
  • Hosting, infrastructure, and content-delivery providers that serve the Site;
  • Analytics and performance-monitoring providers; and
  • Embedded platforms (for example, video or social content) that may set their own cookies when their content loads.

These providers may process limited information on our behalf in order to deliver their services. We take reasonable steps to use providers that maintain appropriate security and privacy practices.

7. Disclosure of your information

We may share personal information only in limited circumstances:

  • with service providers who process it on our behalf, under appropriate obligations;
  • where required or authorised by law, or to respond to lawful requests from public authorities;
  • to protect the rights, safety, and property of WHATISGM, our users, or the public; and
  • in connection with a business transaction such as a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, subject to this policy.

8. International data transfers

Some of our service providers may store or process information outside Australia. Where this occurs, we take reasonable steps to ensure your information is handled consistently with this policy and applicable law.

9. Data retention

We keep personal information only for as long as necessary for the purposes described in this policy, to comply with our legal obligations, resolve disputes, and enforce our agreements. Aggregated or de-identified data, which cannot reasonably be used to identify you, may be kept for longer.

10. How we protect your information

We take reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect personal information from loss, misuse, and unauthorised access, disclosure, or alteration. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, however, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

11. Children’s privacy

The Site is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will take appropriate steps to delete it.

12. Your rights

Subject to applicable law, you may:

  • ask what personal information we hold about you and request access to it;
  • ask us to correct information that is inaccurate or out of date;
  • ask us to delete information we hold about you;
  • withdraw consent or opt out of communications at any time; and
  • make a complaint about how we have handled your personal information.

13. Third-party links

The Site links to and references external websites and sources. We are not responsible for the content or privacy practices of those third parties. Visiting them is at your own discretion.

14. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the “Last updated” date above. Significant changes may be highlighted on the Site. Your continued use of the Site after an update means you accept the revised policy.
